Sex and the Black Church!

With the recent statistics about Young black girls and STDs it seems like sex in the Black community is on everyone’s mind. Last year we all debated the responsibility of rap and hip hop in continuing the objectification of black women. Now everyone’s interested in the black church’s role of lack thereof in sexual education. Some people are saying that the majority of black churches have a lot to say about everything except sex and that’s where the problem lies. Cousin Jeff of the BETs “Cousin Jeff Chronicles” (one of the few quality ideas from “Black Embarrassment Television”) is just one of a few people in media speaking out about the black church and sex. Last week, Sheryl Lee Ralph was on the Michael Baisden show, talking about National Black HIV/AIDS awareness and testing event that she was hosting in New York. She said that she’d personally contacted about 40 churches and that only two were willing to participate. Why does the black church have its’ head in the sand when it comes to sex. I’m an active Church-goer so I’m in no way attempting to bash the church but I’m all about looking at some facts here. The church is filled with single women (free plug for any brothas out there looking for some good women), and a lot of them are single mothers. You can’t just wish up a baby you have to have sex in order to have them. Back when the bible was written and in the olden days when the traditions of the Black church were established many people got married right after puberty. (14-16) those that went to college got married immediately after that (around 20- 22) but nowadays folks aren’t getting married until they’re 30’s and 40’s, so is it realistic for the religious leaders of the black community to keep pretending that people are remaining sexually abstinent?

  1. Hi Shannon, I just started a new blog that might be of interest to you. The recent CDC release is a topic I plan to discuss.

  2. There’s more illicite sex of all kind going on in the church than in “the world” from the pulpit to the door. PLS..judgement begins in the household of faith (according to the bible) I’d luv to sit in church one Sunday and suddenly a shot one every member’s indiscretions would appear on the big screen in front of the church. There would be no more judgement, less preaching about sin and more preaching about Jesus. Pulpit pimps dis gays in order to deflect their own mess. Gays are easy targets because they are in the church and world minority. Grow up and mind your own bedrooms and lives.
