Concert Review- Kanye West “Glow in the Dark” Tour

May 6, 2008

Sugar Babies, Sugar Babies!!! Last night I went to Kanye West’s Glow in the Dark concert. There was so much right with this concert, but first I’ll talk about what was wrong.

First of all, how can you push up the time of a show, on the day of the show?? It’s a Monday night and chances are that if you could afford the expensive behind ticket, you had to work that day. So a whole slew of people missed Lupe Fiasco (myself included). His most die hard fans were standing in line outside the amphitheater cursing as security confiscated their cameras, while Lupe’s live version of “Superstar” blared in the background. Sucks for them…

Now on to the good stuff!! N.E.R.D. was freaking awesome!! I’m talking high energy, dragging people on stage, jumping off stage to meet folks in wheelchairs, and shouting out the groupie that stood in front of the hotel all day waiting to meet them. If I hadn’t already liked N.E.R.D. this would have definitely changed my mind. We had the pleasure of sitting next to a young lady that has to be their biggest fan, She was straight hype the whole time, and this was her third NERD show this year. Now that’s some dedication!

I have to tell you, this was probably the most diverse concert I’ve ever been too. People of all races, mixed couples of all varieties and mixed groups of friends ( I don’t mean just a token like usual, I mean really mixed), but the crowd was majority white, and they had a great time, singing along (and being smart enough to skip saying N*gg*) and dancing wildly (at one point the moves were so lethal I feared for my safety)

Now on to Rhihanna. I’m honest when I say that Rhihanna is gorgeous, even with the new “business in the front, party in the back haircut.” She’s a very pretty girl, not pencil thin or anything like that. Now, She sang live the entire time, which is good, but her dancing was lackluster. I don’t expect people to sing live and dance like Janet. Shoot Janet doesn’t even sing live. But Rhihanna has a bad habit of looking quite bored…with herself. I don’t know if that’s her “cool” look, but it looked a little dull. On another note she didn’t sound too horrible. There were some pitch problems, but that’s nothing a vocal coach can’t fix. My only other criticism was that her dancers took too long with their transitions. She had a costume change and the stage went dark while the dancers moved around, no music was even playing. In my opinion It would have been smoother if the lights stayed up, the band played a segue and the dancers ran to their spots as Rhihanna walked off. It happened again when they were segueing to an different song and Rhihanna was still on stage. Shorter transitions would have made it a smoother show.

Now Kanye…. was serious! My dude stood on this all terrain planet looking thing by himself (the band was underneath the set), rapped all of his hits telling a complete story, which I won’t tell in case you haven’t seen the show yet./ He kept the crowd on our feet (even though my shoes were hurting bad!) the entire time, with no hype man, and no back up dancers/hoochies. Just the man, the mic and his elaborate set. Some interesting things about the night: Kanye forgot the words to the first song (“Good Morning” from “Graduation”) and free styled the rest about being in Tampa. It was actually kind of cool.
He also felt the need to sing, yes like actually sing. And he was trying to tear up the end of “Welcome to the Good Life.” (I mean like playing with new notes in the scale and whatnot.) He was feeling it.

Overall it was an excellent concert, I had a great time with some great music.

People of note-
I met Orlando of Wild 98.7 and his wife at last night’s concert.
Chris Brown was there (Pharrell shouted him out)
John Legend and his Beard/ girlfriend were there. They had close seat but then decided to sit with the engineers, causing a frenzy of illegal photos.

( I was sitting way to close to the security folks to try it. The folks in front of us got kicked out for taking pictures)
