New York Mag’s take on the Obama Marriage…
August 17, 2008
Ok, I’m feeling exhausted from all of the garbage, racsim, sexism, stereotypes, predjudice and overall foolishness I’ve been hearing, seeing and reading lately. here’s the latest source of my fatigue.
Black & Blacker; The racial politics of the Obama marriage
Yeah folks that is the title of the article. it could have easily been called “Happy Mulatto and Negative Darkie, How Michelle is ruining our “happy black stereotypes” or “House Negro and Field hand: how Michelle Obama is the bad colored” Or just simply “Black women ruin successful careers”
Here are some “golden nuggets”(pellets)from this article.
Michelle must project herself as black to one community, but she also must act white to another, whatever either adjective means nowadays.
Hello, welcome to being a black professional in America. She can’t project herself as black, she is black not even Michael and Latoya can change that, but explain to me how one should “act white?” since that’s something you claim she must do but you’re not sure what that is.
she was angry about the treatment of black people in America. And anger will not do. Besides, what does she have to be angry about, with her Ivy education and Hyde Park mansion? Isn’t she herself an example of the fact that racism is over in America?
translation- You ungrateful uppity Negress! how dare you question race in this country when we let you and 5 other people who looked like you get Ivy League educations! so what if there are other members of your family and in your old neighborhood with low paying jobs, poor schools and no health insurance. So what if Pookie and them can’t vote anymore because of a bad choice they made 20 years ago. they didn’t “pull themselves up from their bootstraps!” now take the education WE let you get and don’t say anything about race anymore!
Obama is particularly comfortable in front of black audiences, who inspire him to be passionate and energetic. Watching him, I wondered if in this context he would use the N-word, if only to make a point
Because all black people use the N-word around each other Even Jesse Jackson did it! WRONG! the good Rev. does a lot of stuff the rest of us won’t do. The truth is that for every comedian, rapper, author or educational scholar that contiues to champion the rights of the N-word, (and the denial of it to others) there are other black folks that do not use the word ever and certainly those that still use it have the sense not to use it in a professional setting, so why would you wonder whether or not A Senator running for President would use a racial slur? When McCain visits rural areas do you wonder is he’s going to say “cracker” or “redneck”?
The African-American population of the state in the seventies was less than 2 percent, and the disenfranchised population in the islands were native Hawaiians. It was before the advent of MTV, so ghetto-speak wasn’t ubiquitous, and kids who liked to slum it with language played with pidgin
Ghetto speak??? eww
University of Hawaii when she met Obama Senior, the first African student at the university. (As a black comedian put it, jarringly, at an Obama fund-raiser and comedy workshop I attended recently, “His mom screwed the darkest nigger she could find in 1969.”)
Why even include this tasteless joke from a Comedy workshop? poor taste indeed
Even if Obama is the kind of black politician that middle-American white voters can get behind, the secret fear is that he could be a black Trojan horse with all sorts of passengers like Wright—or onetime compadres Bernie Mac and Ludacris—peeping out from under the canvas. He could be … Michelle. Or at least what Michelle represents: a smart, angry black person in the White House.
Who in the hell keeps telling people that Michelle is angry??! I’m angry that people keep calling her that. what does an angry black woman look like? and angry black person? what is it that makes them different from the happy blacks? does being smart make you and angry black? or does being ignorant make you a happy black? please tell me which one!
there are way too many problems with this article! it’s basically pitting a husband and wife against each other. Either Barack isn’t black enough or Michelle is TOO black and thus will weigh him down in the eyes of the white majority. BOOOO! I’m not a fan of this article at all! the writer said all that(and aparently only found black people with poor grammar to quote) and still managed not to make a point.
