June 18, 2008

Earlier this week I talked about the “Fools at Fox” and the Claim that their are only angry Black women on TV (Sans the Beloved Oprah of course).
Well Gina at “What About our Daughters” issued a challenge to her readers and I do Love a challenge.

Name as many non-Angry Black women on national television as you can. The woman can be real or a fictional character. You must name the show, the network and the show times

Going to the Chapel and we’re gonna get married….Conversation Starter

June 17, 2008

There’s been a lot of hoopla surrounding the Gay and Lesbian couples that are going to get married Today under California’s new law, and that got me thinking about marriage in general.
In modern day culture we’re not considered “married” until you go downtown and get a license. In some cultures there is no government sanctioned wedding act.
During slavery, slaves were prohibited from legal acts like signing a license so a “marriage” was sugnified by “jumping the broom”. Some cultures pay a dowery, others simply “consumate” the relationship.( which is why some people warn against “soul marriages”.) We often hear “it’s just a piece of paper” being used as an excuse for people not to get married, but is it?? I once heard a man say that “No man will truly work on a relationship unless he is contractually obligated to do so” so the paper is just as important as the vow.

So here’s my Question- What makes a marriage?? Not just legally I mean in the spirtual/emotional sense. Are you married when you sign the license or when you say the vows? are you married once the two of you agree to go through the legal proceedings? Are you married once he/or she asks to get married? or are you spiritually married once you consumate the relationship?? At what point does marriage begin??

What do you think??
