BLACK WOMEN MATTER!!!- NYPD neglect leads to Lawsuit

May 8, 2008

The last time I read something this disturbing was the Dunbar Village case. In 2003 a young college student was kidnapped off the busy streets of New York, raped repeatedly tortured and beaten to death. She was bright, smart, dependable, conservative, shy and a good student. When she went missing, her mother practically begged NYPD to search, call a press conference, investigate, and look for the daughter. Instead she got this response.

In case you missed it, a peaceful New York protest against the Sean Bell verdict has ended in arrest. Civil rights activist Al Sharpton has been arrested along with Nicole Paultre Bell (Fiancee/wife of Sean Bell) and about 190 other demonstrators were arrested for ā€œcivil disobedience.

Coversation starter- how do you transcend race? PLEASE COMMENT!

May 5, 2008

I read this piece on one of my favorite websites TheRoot.com, and it got me thinking ā€œwhat does it mean to ā€˜transcend race’?ā€ and who defines what it means to ā€˜transcend?ā€

Get ‘em Baby!- a little kid tells Detroit Politician what’s really good!!

May 2, 2008

I caught this on What About Out Daughters, and laughed out loud!!!

We complain so much about kids ( and this one is a little smart mouthed little aleck) but she’s actually really great!

The Video explains it all

So it’s official. This little girl is a better Detroit community leader than mayor Kwame( his nasty texting self), the city council President and this Monica Conyers. They really need to let her ask Mayor Freaky text, KK some questions.

I feel like starting a college fund for little mama!

I’m Just Being Honest-Reflections on the Sean Bell Verdict

April 27, 2008

It’s been a day or two since I’ve posted any new news or opinion pieces. Partly because the cocoa colored news has been a little slow, but mainly because I’ve been a little down since the Sean Bell verdict. I’m not from New York; I don’t know Sean Bell, his FiancĆ©e, Nicole Paultre-Bell or anyone associated with the case and I can’t say that I was truly shocked or surprised by the verdict. And yet it has burdened my spirit.

Conversation Starter-Our Greatest Challenges PLEASE COMMENT

April 18, 2008

So I was glancing around on Essence’s Website, and they have a piece where they asked a number of current ā€œGreat Black Thinkersā€ ā€œwhat is the greatest challenge facing African Americans in 2008?ā€
So often we are expected to vote for other people’s causes and told that it ā€œlines upā€ with ours. Democrats tell us we need more social liberal policies and Republicans often play on our moral conservative beliefs (abortion, gay marriage etc), but what do we need and want in order for our people to progress? What challenges are tearing us down? PLEASE Comment!!

Open letter to Bob Johnson

April 15, 2008

Dear Bob Johnson,

Everyone’s entitled to their own opinions and to vote for their own candidates. Tavis Smiley, Rep. Maxine Waters, and Maya Angelou are all prominent black people who have chosen to support Hillary Clinton. Although it is not the same choice that I have made I can respect that and respect them. It’s you I have a problem with.

Do you Remember the Dream of Dr. King?- the 40th anniversary of the death of MLK

April 3, 2008

MLK Slaying in Memphis

This Friday April 4th marks the 40th anniversary of the assassination of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I want to urge you to spend the day reflecting on the work of Dr King, Malcolm X, Medgar Evers and others who sacrificed their lives and the safety of their families so that all people could truly be free in America. Now we need to ask ourselves if we a truly living the ā€œDreamā€ of Dr. King? Black men are still being incarcerated at an alarming rate; we’re at the losing end of the gap when it comes to economics, education, marriage and black on black violence just won’t end. So are we living Dr. King’s dream? If the answer is no, what can we do to change that? What can WE DO to positively turn the tide in the Black Community????
