Civil Rights Leader charged with Incest

April 10, 2008

Current James Bevel PictureA Young James Bevel
This news made me sooo sad. James Bevel, a former Civil Rights Leader has been charged with incest and unfortunately with his own daughters. It’s a crazy story but apparently this man had been molesting his child at the age of 6 and continued routinely molesting her for years. The abuse culminated with full on intercourse when the daughter was 15 (this took place in the early 90’s). As adults his daughter and two of her other sisters (he has 14!!!) confronted Bevel because of fears that he was abusing a younger daughter. A taped phone call was his undoing. In a 2005 conversation with the daughter he raped, he defended his actions, partially blaming her for not resisting his advances and shaming her for ‘fornicating’ – Read the rest of this entry ?

March 26, 2008

Ward Connerly Charicature

Ward “Yes Massah” Connerly is at it again. This time he’s using the achievements of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton as a platform for the ending of affirmative action. He believes that The fact that a black person and a woman are serious contenders for the highest office in the land means that we’re over race no longer need it to ensure diversity in schools or the workplace.

Black Women-The Great Divide

March 25, 2008

I was talking on the phone to one of my best friend, railing on and on about some sort of injustice. She abruptly interrupted me with this question. “Are you a feminist?” I quickly answered “No of course not.” I believe in equality for all people in spite of personal preferences. I believe in a woman’s rights to choose what’s best for her (career, motherhood or both, chivalry or going Dutch etc etc) and yes, I’ve taken a number of college courses and read a bunch of “Feminist writings” (Audre Lourde, Betty Freidan and more) but as a heterosexual. Christian, Black Woman, I don’t feel like a feminist.

A Great Black man-Songs for my Grandpa in Eflat

March 18, 2008

In all of my blogs about relationships and stuff, I purposely make a distinction between males and “good men.” In the course of me writing and talking to people, I’ve been asked (mainly by males) What is a good man? I really had to think about it, because there is no blanket answer. I’ve every guy I’ve dated was a good guy, but not necessarily a good man. Some guys are good men but just because he’s a good guy doesn’t make him the right good man you me (or you). So what is a good man?

Go sit down! please

March 11, 2008

I am outraged!! (This seems to be a permanent emotion that I’m having lately) Those of you who are my Facebook friends will remember the story that I posted about the savage rape and attack on a Haitian woman and her son down in Dunbar Village (West Palm Beach) by a group of teen boys (yes all black). Well the folk at “What About Our Daughters” have been following that story and searching for support and answers for months. They’ve been demanding to hear from our so called “black leaders” to support this woman and condemn the actions of these teens. Well A black leader finally spoke up… in support of the teens that are suspected of committing the crime!

A letter of Resignation

March 3, 2008

I officially turn in my letter of resignation. You see, I had no idea that the job description would change so drastically. Maybe I never understood the job at all. In either case I’m done: take this job and shove it. On this day right now, I permanently declare that I am no longer attempting to be a “Ride or die” or a “Down A** “chick … Read the rest of this entry ?

Who in the Hell Left the Gate Open?!!

March 1, 2008

A 17-year old boy shot and killed his mother and her two other children one of whom is the 4-year- old daughter of rapper Juvenile (of “Back that A** up” fame.) This is so sad and sickening to me! How could a man kill his mother of all people and his two little sisters? What’s going on with our young black men?? I’m just in shock! No motive has been established. The Mother also happens to be a Deputy in Gwinnet County, Ga. My prayers and condolences go out to everyone involved.
