Senate Approves Slavery Apology Save Email Print

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ The Florida Senate has formally apologized for its long support of slavery in a resolution calling for reconciliation.

Senators quickly approved the resolution after hearing some of the history detailing the savage treatment endured by slaves in the 19th century and the reluctance of politicians in the last century to recognize the intolerance and mistreatment of blacks.

The House will take up the measure later today.

Florida enacted its first slave laws in the 1820s as a territory, and early political leaders in the state were some of the most vigorous defenders of slavery.

In the 1850s, at a time when Florida’s population was around 111,000, 44 percent of the population were slaves. After the Civil War, Florida’s Constitution of 1868 guaranteed blacks the right to vote and abolished slavery in the state, but inequities remained.

Who in the Hell Left the Gate Open?- Ward Connerly Edition

March 26, 2008

Ward Connerly Charicature

Ward “Yes Massah” Connerly is at it again. This time he’s using the achievements of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton as a platform for the ending of affirmative action. He believes that The fact that a black person and a woman are serious contenders for the highest office in the land means that we’re over race no longer need it to ensure diversity in schools or the workplace.

Who in the Hell Left the Gate open- Pat Buchanan edition

March 23, 2008

Pat Buchanan felt the need to mouth-off and post a rebuttal on Obama’s speech about race. I am sickened by some of the garbage this man has to say… like this little jewel of racial harmony:

First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known.
Wright ought to go down on his knees and thank God he is an American.

Black and Mad!

March 20, 2008

I read this in my local daily paper (TBT), and I thought it was an excellent piece. It originally ran in the LA Times, But I found it online on the Baltimore Sun Newpaper website. Here it is

Black and mad
The controversy over Obama’s pastor reflects white fear of African-American anger
By Erin Aubry Kaplan
March 20, 2008

I’m mad. Let me qualify that - I’m black and mad.

The mad I’m talking about I inherited from generations of black people before me. I learned early in life that this mad is not curable (not yet) but that I could manage it. But sometimes I get flare-ups of anger that defy management.

New Addition!
Geraldine Ferraro
And the List gets longer and longer…
Bill ClintonBob Johnson- BET FounderAndrew Young
Hillary really needs to do a better job of wrangling in some of her supporters. It seems they have a terrible case of “foot in mouth disease.” First it was good ol’ Bob “shoe shine” Johnson (the Obama Smoking quote), followed “First Ladies Man” Bill Clinton (There’s too many blacks in SC for Hil to win) and Don’t forget the saddest contributor of all Civil Rights Activist “Andrew Young (Bill Clinton has been with more Black women then Obama) and the most recent person making an addition to the list of “things supporters should not say” is former Vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro, with this lovely quote :

Doggy Racism?

March 6, 2008

If there’s one thing I hate, it’s discrimination! Prejudice based on race or gender or any other esoteric stuff is crazy to me. So when I when I told what I am about to tell to my friends last year they laughed at me. Apparently I’d become too vigilant in my crusade for justice. I laughed and agreed with them. That is until today when MSNBC confirmed my suspicions. Read the rest of this entry ?
